Throughout the Naruto series, we learn that it is possible to train in the use of natural energy to gain incredible powers in addition to massive chakra reserves.
To achieve this, one must train with special animals in hidden places, gaining abilities unique to the type of animal chosen as a mentor. For example, Naruto trained with the toads of Mount Myoboku and unlocked Sage Mode, granting him a significant power-up.
Why Sasuke Couldn’t Use Sage Mode in Naruto
Given Sasuke’s obsession with power—especially during the events of Naruto Shippuden—it might seem natural to expect that he would attempt Sage Mode training. After all, he was Orochimaru’s pupil for some time, and Orochimaru had ties with the snakes of Ryuchi Cave.
However, Sasuke’s only contact with natural energy came indirectly through the Curse Mark, a diluted form of Jugo’s clan ability refined by Orochimaru. Unlike true Sage Mode, it was unstable and incomplete.
Sage Mode requires sacrifice and a perfect body to withstand and balance natural chakra. The series makes it clear that mastering this power demands perfect equilibrium of mind, body, and spirit. Sasuke, particularly in his youth, was unstable and reckless. He constantly pushed his chakra to its limits through the Mangekyo Sharingan and high-level elemental jutsu, leaving no margin for such precise control.
The story also shows that if a user fails to properly balance natural energy with their own chakra, they risk permanent transformation—into a stone toad, for instance, as seen with Pain’s victims, or into a snake, as happened with Orochimaru.
Moreover, mastering Sage Mode requires a mentor, and such teachers are rare and selective. Even with access, some sacrifices are unavoidable. Kabuto, for example, underwent countless body modifications to achieve the Dragon Sage Mode—something Sasuke would never allow for himself.
Ultimately, Sasuke didn’t need Sage Mode. He became one of the most powerful shinobi in the world without it. The benefits of Sage Mode would not have outweighed the drawbacks or aligned with his personal goals.
